With an RGB LED you can, of course, produce red, green, and blue light, and by configuring the intensity of each LED, you can produce other colors as well.
For example, to produce purely blue light, you’d set the blue LED to the highest intensity and the green and red LEDs to the lowest intensity. For a white light, you’d set all three LEDs to the highest intensity.
In a Common Cathode RGB LED, all three LEDs share a negative connection (Cathode).
How to check the type of RGB LED with multimeter?
Visibly identifying it is difficult. You can use a multimeter to find out as well as the LED Colors pins too. In the multimeter, rotate the knob to Diode testing mode (Diode Symbol mentioned). In the RGB LED, the longest pin will be the common terminal (in comm0n cathode LED the longest pin is an Cathode, similarly for the common Anode). So you need to place the Black Wire of the multimeter to the longest lead and place the Red wire to the other terminals one by one. If your LED glows then it will be common cathode type. You can change the terminal and check whether you have common anode.
